Annual Spring Concert

May 9, 2019 @ 12:00 am

The New Mexico Military Institute Music Department will present its annual Spring Concert on Thursday, May 9th, at 7:00 PM in NMMI’s Pearson Auditorium. The concert will begin with the singing of the National Anthem by the NMMI Vocal Ensemble. The choral segment will continue with the performance of a tribute to our nation’s servicemen and women entitled “Who Are the Brave”—accompanied by members of the Pecos Valley Brass. Then the choir and members of the ensemble will perform songs from the popular Broadway musical “Wicked” and close with a selection from the video game “Civilization IV” entitled “Baba Yetu”—a Swahili adaptation of “The Lord’s Prayer.” These final selections will be accompanied by staff pianist Mrs. Michelle Olson and Jazz Band Assistant, Mr. David Hett.
HQ Live!, the NMMI jazz band, will open the instrumental portion of the Spring Concert with the fabulous Cannonball Adderley Quintet number “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” featuring guest guitarist Mr. Jimmy Barnes. Other selections will showcase talented jazz band soloists on some straight-ahead swing music and a Latin piece entitled “Caracas.”
The NMMI Concert Band will then take the stage with a fanfare titled “Invincible” by Robert W. Smith, followed by a beautiful, melodic work entitled “Unending Rainbows” and the rousing Karl King march “Aces of the Air.”
The final portion of the concert will feature the combined Concert Band and Concert Choir as they perform Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” and a medley of service songs entitled “A Tribute to the Armed Services.” The groups will conclude the concert with singing of the NMMI Alma Mater “Old Post” and “The NMMI March,” the school’s fight song.
Admission is free, but seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive when the house opens at 6:30 PM. For more information contact LTC Steve Thorp at 575-624-8443.
